CLIENT UN Volunteers West and Central Africa

THE CHALLENGE
Celebrate the United Nations Volunteer programme’s 50-year anniversary by highlighting the work the volunteers have undertaken in West and Central Africa.

THE OUTCOME
Conceptualised and designed a photo book and social media campaign that shared the stories and successes of volunteers and employees who have served the United Nations Volunteer programme since its inception in 1970.

The United Nations Volunteer programme contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. Working with partners, they integrate qualified, highly motivated, and well-supported UN Volunteers into development programming and promote the value and global recognition of volunteerism. In 2022, the vast programme saw over 12,400 volunteers contribute to peace, security, and human rights across 166 countries.

As the organisation's 50th anniversary was approaching, the Regional Office in West and Central Africa reached out to Future by Design. The West and Central Africa region welcomed the first UN Volunteers in 1971. Since then, many people from all walks of life have joined the programme to support peace and development in the region, and UNV Regional Office intended to reflect on their key achievements and bring to light inspirational stories by former and current volunteers.

We were honoured to help mark the occasion by designing a photo book and social media campaign featuring results, experiences, and success stories from former volunteers, alongside testimonials from partners and serving volunteers. It shows the impact of volunteerism on their lives, results, and careers. We strived to conceptualise the design, making it both aesthetically pleasing and well organised as it was divided into two languages - English and French.
