THE CHALLENGE
Develop a powerful, vibrant and relevant visual identity that speaks to the theme of volunteerism in the Sahel region

THE OUTCOME

  • Novel visual identity (including brand manual, logo, colour palette, typography, slogan), social media cards for digital communication and guidelines, print materials – delivered in English and French

  • Post Sahel Volunteers roundtable (19-20 November 2019), key governmental and non-governmental stakeholders of volunteerism in the Sahel region (Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritanie, Niger) committed to strengthen their support to volunteering

  • Sahel Volunteers online campaign resulted in a 7% increase in the number of followers of UNV ROWCA on social media (achieved in one month, November 2019)

In sub-Saharan Africa, Member States have adopted a variety of attitudes and approaches to enhance volunteering. These initiatives cover different areas including youth, climate change, environment, governance, social inclusion, peacebuilding and other areas of the SDGs. The region is increasingly aware of the untapped potential of volunteering to implement the 2030 Agenda, due to the support that volunteers can offer on the micro-level (individual and community) in many thematic areas.

The Sahel context is a strategic place to observe how volunteering can impact people’s lives and provide concrete responses to community needs. It is indeed one of the major crisis environments in Africa and one of the places where different forms of volunteering have been observed to meet the needs of the population by articulating with various other types of interventions.

At Future by Design, we were proud to conceptualize and develop the Sahel Volunteers vibrant visual identity and to contribute to a new narrative for volunteerism in the region. Visual identity guidelines provide recommendations on the correct application of the identity across all communications materials, which tackle the theme of volunteerism in the region. Sahel Volunteers logo, colour set, and typography were carefully developed to support a strategy that can maintain the brand’s vibrancy throughout all communications materials produced for print and digital marketing. Materials were developed in English and French.

UN Volunteers officially launched the Sahel Volunteers identity in a social media campaign in November 2019. As a result, the followers of the UNV Regional Office West and Central Africa increased by 7% in one month. The influence of the campaign goes far beyond the event of the roundtable itself as the campaign logo will continue to be used as a logo for volunteerism in the region.
