More than 80,000 thousand female and male peacekeeping personnel serve today in 13 peacekeeping operations around the world. Two-thirds of UN peacekeepers are deployed in environments of ongoing conflict and operate in increasingly complex, high-risk contexts. Mission-specific pre-deployment training remains crucial in enabling peacekeeping personnel to meet diverse, complex challenges on the ground in a manner commensurate with UN values and ethics.
The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is a specialised training agency of the United Nations with a mandate to develop individual and institutional capacities for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through outcome-based learning and training initiatives. Within the framework of UNITAR, the Division for Peace contributes to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal 16 of Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions by building the capacities of key actors on the ground, including the preparation of female and male peacekeepers for their upcoming deployment.
The overall objective for the development of a Learning Solutions Guide has been to serve as a valuable resource for any trainer tasked with organising a simulation exercise along with UN standards. Using the Guide as a basis for UNITAR’s advanced Training of Trainers programme on simulation exercises is expected to benefit thousands of uniformed and civilian personnel with a proven impact on knowledge development and retention.
At the Future by Design, we were proud to support UNITAR in creative aspects of designing the Learning Solutions Guide as highly engaging learning material, to ensure that training participants are confident, ready and well-equipped to make their profound contribution to sustaining peace. Materials were developed in English and can be easily adapted to various distribution channels – offline and digital.
